A collaboration between a trio of Australia’s most engaging pop musicians, Holly Hebe, Ivoris and Zhuli, has seen the delivery of a very zesty track ‘Supervillain’ that pops and fizzles with sardonic glee. When all else around seems dark and gloomy, this is a golden ray of sunshine that lights up the firmament, with their tongues firmly planted in their collective cheeks.

With an adroit attitude-laden feisty stance wrapped in delicious melodies, this is a wry tale of empowerment reclaiming misogynistic tropes delivered in a sweet and hyperkinetic bounce:

I could be the drama, I could be the one who’s in your head, I could be the monster hiding underneath your bed

According to Zhuli:

‘Supervillain’ paints a picture of the people who make you the villain of their stories, who live their own narratives in their head where they can do no wrong, who gaslight and exaggerate. The lyrics take that person’s perspective and embrace it and embody it. We wrote this song on an all-female writing trip that Sab (Ivoris) organised earlier this year, and it’s my favourite song to come out of that experience because it was a great bonding moment for all of us!

Ivoris says:

Alana [Zhuli], Holly and I were talking about how common it is for women to be labelled the “crazy ex” or the “bitch” when someone wants to paint themselves as the victim. So we thought it would be super fun to play on that idea, and become the villains in the story!

Hebe adds:

The mixing stage was really fun, as I was able to experiment with the blend of all of our vocals and
play around with fitting in the harmonies so that our voices could all feature and be supported by each other.

The result is something silky slick and sneery, an effervescent strawberry pop shimmer with a barbed-wire spine that recalls Lily Allen or Mallrat:

‘Supervillain’ is out now and available to stream and download here.
