Broken Colours are stepping back into the spotlight as the year draws to a close, returning with Could Be Worse, a long-anticipated EP that adds a fresh burst of energy to their indie-rock universe. The four-track release shows the High Wycombe group hitting their stride, building on the momentum they’ve already generated with a sound that feels bigger, bolder, and more assured.
Three previous singles: ‘Brother’, ‘Before The Sun’, and ‘Hey It’s Me’, anchor the EP, each one reflecting the band’s wide-angle approach to songwriting. From surging, full-throttle anthems to songs that embrace quieter emotional spaces, the collection underlines the band’s ambition and the intensity that has long fuelled their creative identity.
Joining them is ‘Pretending’, the latest track to emerge from the project. With its blues-tinged swagger and rock ’n’ roll grit, the song sees Broken Colours tapping deeper into the punchy sound that first won them attention. Big choruses, driven riffs, and a hint of nostalgia come together with a modern fire, capturing a band leaning confidently into their strengths.
“In a constantly evolving modern world, where fame, money, and recognition seem to be at everyone’s fingertips, it feels like people will do anything to achieve these. This is where the song ‘Pretending’ comes in, highlighting this very issue. In a world where people give money to homeless individuals just for video views, it makes us question society, and that’s just one example.”
Broken Colours’ roots run through High Wycombe, where the four-piece first shaped their funk-driven, rock-infused style—one that has drawn comparisons to Jamiroquai and Arctic Monkeys since their breakout self-titled EP in 2016. Their reputation for electrifying live shows has taken them across the UK and into Europe, sharing stages with artists including The Blockheads, Jack Bugg, The Zutons and The Subways.
