News: Saya Gray’s Sonic Patchwork Comes to Australia for the First Time

Saya Gray doesn’t make music that fits neatly into categories. Her songs are built from fragments: voice memos, cut-up samples, layered guitars and abrupt shifts that arrive like thoughts mid-sentence. Across 19MASTERS (2022), QWERTY I (2023) and QWERTY II (2024), the Japanese-Canadian artist has pieced together a sound that resists polish, chasing something more fractured, more human.

This December marks her first trip to Australia. Gray will play headline shows at Sydney’s Metro Theatre (Dec 1), Brisbane’s Princess Theatre (Dec 3) and Melbourne’s 170 Russell (Dec 7), as well as a set at Meredith Music Festival on Wadawurrung Country (Dec 5). The run is presented by Handsome Tours, with pre-sale opening August 28 and general on-sale from August 29.

The tour follows her debut album SAYA, released in February on Dirty Hit. It pushes deeper into the same restless themes of identity, dislocation and sensory overload that marked her earlier work, but with a sharper sense of perspective. On stage, those fragmented pieces promise to assemble into something immediate and unrepeatable.
