News: US Guitarist Marisa Anderson to Tour Australia After Rising Festival Appearance

Marissa Anderson

US-based guitarist Marisa Anderson brings her first solo Australian tour to the country this February, following a quietly impressive run of work that has placed her among the most distinctive guitar voices working today. Touring from February 24–28, Anderson will perform dates across Melbourne, Sydney, Thirroul, Murwillumbah and Brisbane, marking her first time touring Australia alone after previous appearances alongside Jim White at Melbourne’s Rising Festival in 2022.

Anderson’s music draws deeply from the history of the guitar while resisting any fixed idea of tradition. Her playing moves between composition and improvisation, folding elements of American folk, jazz and experimental music into a sound that feels informed rather than nostalgic. Publications including The New Yorker and NPR have noted her singular approach, while her work continues to appear across a wide range of festivals and cultural spaces.

Alongside her solo output, Anderson has remained a prolific collaborator. Her duo recordings with White, including 2024’s Swallowtail, sit alongside recent soundtrack work for the feature film A Perfect Day For Caribou and contributions to albums by Charlie Parr, Myriam Gendron and Big|Brave. Earlier projects have seen her working with William Tyler, Matmos, Beth Ditto and Sharon Van Etten, among others.

Classically trained and shaped by time spent in country, jazz and circus bands, Anderson’s current work is informed by research into mid-20th century recorded music from the Islamic world, Southeast Asia and the Soviet Union. It’s a background that adds depth to performances that reward close listening, making this short run of Australian shows a rare opportunity to see an artist whose practice continues to evolve in public.
