Naarm/Melbourne shoegaze band BB Sabina came onto our radar last year with their single ‘Multitude’ (see our review here) and we are very honored to bring you an exclusive listen to their new single ‘In between’.
A haunting opening coasts on a drone of synths with crystal guitar shards with an ominous percussive beat and the enigmatic vocals of Beth Uhe – powerful and yearning. The result is something atmospheric and shimmering like a mirage in the desert.
According to Uhe, the idea for the song was conceived during a road trip from Mparntwe/Alice Springs to Garramilla/Darwin, when she was living in the Northern Territory. A moment swimming in a remote
waterhole provided the track’s central image: a water bug standing effortlessly on the surface, balanced by surface tension. She says:
It captures a yearning for that weightless in-between space, like the surface of the water. Not fully immersed, yet not on the land – wanting to be comfortable with that place in between.
Indeed the music evokes an endless cinematic desert sky, brilliant blue and burning hot with a sense of liquidity and indolence, shimmering and languid. It’s as immersive and refreshing as a cooling billabong:
‘In between’ is out tomorrow (27 February) and will be available at all the usual download and streaming sites including the band’s Bandcamp site here.
You can catch the band live launching the single ‘In Between’ single launch at The Retreat Hotel in Melbourne on 15 March in the afternoon with support from Great Falls – details below.
