We are honoured to premiere the new single ‘Earthquake’ from Naarm/Melbourne surf punk exponents Hobsons Bay Coast Guard. Try keep your feet still for this one: it’s a gravity-defying blast of hyperactive fun.
Guitars tumble out of the speakers with an abandon as the hyperactive beat propels the track and a harmonised chorus sparkles over the top with a B-52’s high stepping trot, an early Split Enz zaniness and a Pee Wee Herman wacky sense of uninhibited extravagance. It’s a joyous pleasure that would make the toes of a dead person twitch.
Erik Scerba says of the track:
‘Earthquake’ was one of the easiest songs to write on the record. We basically started with the name and some rolling drums, and the rest just kind of flowed out. Despite that, it took the longest to record and mix, and we must have done about fifty drum takes and grew a thousand new grey hairs. Even though it’s about a break-up, we wanted it to have a lighthearted and fun sound yet still destructive. This is one of our favourites to play live!
One could imagine that the stage would be set alight with this sort incandescent music.
‘Earthquake’ is out on Thursday, 24 April 2025 through Reef Records and Hobsons Bay Coast Guards will be launching the single like a rocket on Saturday, 3 May at the Bergy Bandroom, Brunswick VIC with support from Metdog and My Guardian Angel, tickets here. Put your lippy on: the gig will be filmed for a concert film.
