We love a little drop of Lasca Dry here at the antipodean outpost of Backseat Mafia, and she continues to produce the most delicious brand of infectious pop to tempt our tastes buds. We proudly premiered her last single ‘Messy Mind’ late last year and the follow up single ‘Behave’ is an hyperactive blast of guitars and bubble-pop, surfing on scaling melodies and a certain insouciant cheekiness. There are traces of sixties beehive-laden kohl-eyed brilliance with luscious harmonies and an arched brow.
This is a perfect panacea for the vicissitudes of life and you can imagine frenetically doing the Mashed Potato, the Monster Mash and the Watusi until you collapse in your velvet flares.
The new single explores the pressure of expectation and the turning point where a people-pleaser begins questioning whose voice they’re listening to, capturing a flash of defiance and the courage to draw a line.
The accompanying music video channels the track’s defiant spirit into something immediate and unfiltered, following Dry as she moves through city streets with a sense of fearless abandon. Shot in a raw, documentary style, the visual captures fleeting moments of movement, spontaneity and release – echoing the song’s tension between expectation and self-expression. Dry says:
Have you ever had an argument on the street? That raw energy is what I wanted to capture in this video – moving through the streets dancing freely, like you just don’t care who’s watching, and I really didn’t! Must have been the loud awesome song in my headphones.
It’s a sheer joy:
Lasca Dry is a prodigious and exciting talent arising from the deep south and deserving of a lot of attention. ‘Behave’ is out now and you can download and stream here.
The single is off Lasca Dry’s forthcoming debut EP ‘Time Keeps Drifting’, arriving 9 April, which can be pre-ordered here.
Lasca Dry will be performing at the Good Gumnuts Festival in Pataway/Burnie – details below.
