EP Review: Macharia – Tega Sikio

There’s a quiet sense of invitation running through Macharia’s Tega Sikio — an EP that asks you to slow down, pay attention and let its songs unfold at their own pace. Meaning “listen” in Swahili, the title feels particularly fitting for a record built around intimate storytelling, rich vocals and a thoughtful blending of Kenyan musical influences with contemporary sounds. Across its five tracks, Macharia moves comfortably between Swahili and English, creating music that feels personal without ever becoming insular.

The title track immediately establishes that atmosphere. “Tega Sikio” is a dreamy, enchanting piece of Afro-folk, built around layers of vocals that weave delicately in and out of one another. Minimal piano and understated drums give the song room to breathe, allowing the vocal arrangements to become the real centrepiece. “Stranger to Me” then brings things closer to the listener, opening with little more than Macharia’s voice and a picked guitar. It has a more recognisable pop/R&B shape than the tracks around it, but its relaxed delivery and emotional clarity give it a particular warmth, while its melody lingers long after the song has finished.

“You’ll See” feels like a meeting point between those two approaches. Guitars wrap around Macharia’s warm vocals, while birdsong and increasingly urgent Afro-inflected percussion give the arrangement a natural ebb and flow. Her movement between languages adds another dimension to the track, particularly as she sings about pride, purpose and giving back. There’s a sense of forward motion here that makes the song especially compelling, but it never loses the gentleness that runs through the EP.

“Moto” takes another turn, showcasing Macharia’s more reflective side through smart, considered songwriting. Jazz-tinged keyboard flourishes punctuate the arrangement, while an eerie electronic wash and scattered percussion create a slightly more atmospheric backdrop. It’s an effective change of texture, giving her vocals a different setting without overwhelming them. By contrast, “Days Go By” closes the EP in a beautifully wistful fashion. Built around a simple guitar line, the song reflects on passing time, changing circumstances and the ways people inevitably change with them. Its sparseness makes the sentiment all the more affecting.

What makes Tega Sikio work so well is its sense of restraint. Macharia doesn’t feel the need to overcrowd these songs; instead, she gives her voice, words and melodies enough space to resonate. There’s a genuine feeling of connection at the heart of the EP, with each track carrying the intimacy of something personally felt and carefully shared. Across five songs, Tega Sikio proves to be a gentle but assured introduction to an artist with a distinctive voice and a compelling way of bringing different musical and cultural worlds together.
