Moonpark LP

Sebastien Chenut aka NEWEM steps out with superb new album Moonpark on bORDEL Records. The 11-track release is named after a park near his house in LA and features collaborations with Curses and Prudence.

Sebastien Chenut is from the acclaimed duo Scratch Massive and is a film and documentary soundtrack composer. He is a master of futuristic and melancholic electronic music and teased this album with well-received singles ‘Blackmoon’ in June and ‘Eyes Linger’ Feat. Curses in September. Now comes the full length which is inspired by NEWEM’s love of space, planets and the galaxies. It sees the artist stepping outside his comfort zone and use a range of pianos, violins and bass instruments to create its immersive and emotive sound.

The cinematic ambiance of opener ‘Genesis’ immediately takes you to an interplanetary space and the emotionally heavy ‘Fontbrune’ pairs, slow, lurching drums with big chords that shimmer like stars behind a yearning vocal. The excellent ‘Tears of Joy’ is a pulsing cosmic groove with twitchy stabs and soothing female coos and ‘Silk Shadow’ layers up heavy drums, dark bass and skittish synth sounds into something brooding and intense. Then comes the dark wave beauty of ‘Eyes Linger’ featuring Curses, the Berlin based artist with credits on Jennifer Cardini’s Correspondant and Dischi Autunno labels as well as his own Ombra International imprint. The track is rooted with cold hits and inviting reverb that provide a perfect sonic bed for the evocative Curses vocal. This is followed by the more sparse and reflective synth patterns of ‘Death in Hong Kong’ and the superb ‘The Thrill I Need’ featuring Prudence, an artist who first found fame with the band, The Dø. Here the vocal soars above heavy and rolling drums and expansive synth work that speaks of a future world.

Summer single ‘Blackmoon’ brings even greater scale with its vast synths and intimate vocal, and the punchy broken beats and nagging pads of ‘Stroyshark’ tug at the heart. Like many tracks on this album, ‘IKKO’ finds beauty in distant deep space darkness, and ‘Mirroring’ ends with sombre chords that drown you as a delicate female voice brings a hint of optimism.

‘Moonpark’ is an adventurous and accomplished album that finds NEWEM exploring plenty of new musical worlds.
