Live Review and Gallery: Capturing the Ethereal – Unknown Mortal Orchestra on 35mm Film at the Sydney Opera House – Eora/Sydney, 30.01.24

On a magical Tuesday night, the hallowed halls of the Sydney Opera House resonated with the dreamy tunes of Unknown Mortal Orchestra (UMO). The Aotearoa/New Zealand-based psych-rockers delivered a spellbinding performance at the Concert Hall, marking their debut at this iconic venue. The sold-out show was a testament to the band’s allure, drawing fans from far and wide to immerse themselves in the ethereal sounds of UMO.

As the crowd eagerly awaited the journey ahead, the atmosphere was electrified. Amongst the sea of faces, keen eyes could spot some well-known Aussie artists, attesting to the magnetism of UMO’s genre-defying music. Amidst the challenge of balancing aperture and shutter speeds in the minimal lighting, I found myself in a fortuitous position to witness the band, consisting of lead vocalist Ruban Neilson and both his father and brother, Chris and Kody Neilson, perform three beautiful songs – ‘The Garden‘, ‘From the Sun‘, and ‘Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark)‘.

What set UMO apart was their commitment to creating a beautifully crafted, “in the moment” artistry. It was a breath of fresh air to look around and see no iPhone flashes in use, as per the band’s request. The focus was solely on the live experience, amplifying the connection between the musicians and the audience. The Sydney Opera House, in all its grandeur, became the perfect canvas for UMO’s distinct and influential sound.

The lack of distractions allowed the audience to fully absorb the captivating and visually striking performance. The interplay of minimal light and shadow enhanced the mood of each song, creating an intimate yet expansive atmosphere within the cavernous Concert Hall. It was a touching moment, realising that everyone was fully immersed in the present, sharing the collective joy of experiencing UMO’s music in its purest form.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s mesmerising performance at the Sydney Opera House is just a glimpse of what lies ahead for the band. As they gear up for the Laneway Festival in Eora/Sydney this Sunday, fans can anticipate another round of soul-stirring melodies and genre-blurring magic. The band’s side shows in Nipaluna/Hobart and Naarm/Melbourne, along with their upcoming UK tour, promise to spread their enchanting vibes across international stages.

In a world often dominated by digital distractions, UMO’s commitment to the live, in-the-moment experience is a rare and cherished phenomenon. The journey becomes not just a musical expedition but a celebration of the profound connection forged through the shared love of music.
