Meet: Bloodhounds Who Have One Of This Years Best Hard Rock Releases

Bloodhounds are one of the most exciting and intelligent rock bands this year, who blew us at Backseat Mafia away with their new EP Eat Lies, which is out now (read our review here). We caught up with the lads to find out why they started and what music they are enjoying at the moment.

Give us a potted history of the band

So, most of us went to college together to study Music, but we hadn’t been in contact for years after. Joe and Jack grew up together, had been in band’s with each other and stayed close friends. They felt like starting a new band and the rest of us got the call up! That was over 5 years ago now, and Kai joined just over a year ago which has pumped some fresh energy into the band!

Who inspired you to start making music

Well we were most inspired to start making music because we felt that there was a decline in heavy grunge music on the scene at the time, and felt we had something we could offer.

And the one or maybe two records that inspired you artistically

There’s so many great albums that have inspired us, but the album that we all really bonded over, and wish we had wrote was Audioslave’s self titled album. It’s full of huge riffs and great vocals and we all still love it

If you’re trying to explain whom you sound like to someone that’s never heard you, what do you say

We usually say we take influence from “those heavy 90’s grunge bands”, so I guess we’re referencing Alice in chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden etc.

Tell us about your new EP

Our new E.P. EAT LIES was born out of the frustration and anger that we all felt during the pandemic and the abuse of power that we all felt exerted at the time: the songs deal with the emotions connected with those circumstances and learning to live with them. We recorded all the Vocals at Abbey Road Studios, and everything else at Sunrise Studios. Our very own Kai Marsh Produced, Recorded and Mixed it himself, and then our boi James Percival Mastered it

Where can we get hold of it

Everywhere! Stream it from all the streaming places, CD’s available from bloodhounds.bigcartel.com or come see a Show!!

Tell us how you write

Typically, Jack, on lead guitar, will come up with a sick riff or two, then we’d work together to build a song and structure around that, Joe may think of the melody on the spot, but usually goes away and writes the lyrics ready for next rehearsal. It’s definitely not limited to this process though, for Instance, Big Enough was wrote almost entirely by Joe.

Tell us about your live show. What would be your dream gig

Joe hypes us up the same way before each show: Don’t Rush, Be the Best band of night and have Fun! We also always say that we have to play every show likes it’s Wembley. So you can expect a lot of energy from a Bloodhounds show! We’d love to be playing some big festivals in the future!

What can we expect from you in the near future

Oh that’s a secret! We’re going to tour this E.P. for a little while yet, but we are still busy working in new stuff behind the scenes too!

Tell us your favourite records that’s rocking your headphones/tour bus/stereo

Superlove, Turnstile, Saint Agnes, Phoxjaw, Kid Kapichi, Idles, Scolds, Snayx, Gnarlah, Haggard Cat, Orchards, CLT DRP … So many great bands releasing new music at the moment it’s brilliant!.
