New Music: Hey Sholay – WDYRWMTB

Odd chap that Walt Disney in many ways, but one thing he did say when he wasn’t accusing, well, just about anyone of being a communist was to say that ‘All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you’.

Hailing from Sheffield and Leeds (but mainly Sheffield) is a group of musicians filmmakers and general Bohemians that over the course of their lifespan have run up a brilliant track record of psych influenced indie, which has quirkyness and more importantly catchy and memorable tunes. Much like Walt Disney Hey Sholay have had their share of adversity and metaphorical ‘kicks in the teeth’. Their Van was stolen several months ago, mid-busy being in an increasingly successful band I imagine, but it contained all their gear.

The gear hasn’t been returned, but the band have, with an Ep called Cloud Castle, of which  the lead song entitled Wdyrwmtb is being previewed now. Out on June 3rd on the Fierce Panda label, it’s a delicious slice of sweeping, singalong indie. Its chiming keyboards give it this sort of poppy feel, but the was of feedback and copious amounts of echo on the vocal shows that while these boys might have lost their instruments, they’ve not lost either their knack of the strange or the ambitious.

Who do you really want me to be? ask the band (yeah, that’s what it stands for – I presume) – forget Walt, you stick to being yourselves.
