Amsterdam’s Altın Gün are heading back to Australia in February and March 2027, armed with their irresistible mix of Anatolian psychedelia, funk, folk and dancefloor-ready grooves. The five-piece will play intimate headline shows at Melbourne’s Night Cat, Sydney’s Metro Theatre and Brisbane’s Triffid, alongside festival appearances at WOMADelaide and WOMAD New Zealand.
Since bursting onto the scene with their 2018 debut On, Altın Gün have been turning traditional Turkish sounds inside out. Think winding bağlama melodies, wah-wah guitars, thumping basslines and swirling organs, all driven by a rhythm section that makes standing still almost impossible.
Drawing inspiration from Turkish legends Barış Manço and Erkin Koray, the band have carved out a sound that reaches back into Anatolian musical history while keeping both feet firmly on the dancefloor.
Their fifth album, Garip, takes that connection to their roots even further. A tribute to legendary Turkish musician Neşet Ertaş, the record reimagines his songs through funk-rock, synthesisers, slide guitar and orchestral strings. For vocalist and bağlama player Erdinç Eçevit, who grew up with Ertaş’s music, it’s a deeply personal project.
But Altın Gün are anything but a history lesson. Their music is restless, playful and built to move bodies. With a reputation for turning venues into full-blown dance parties, their upcoming Australian shows promise plenty of sweat, psychedelic twists and serious grooves.
Artist, promoter and Spotify presales begin Tuesday 20 October at 10am local time, with general tickets on sale Wednesday 21 October at 10am local time.
