Adelaide dream-pop artist effie isobel has released her debut EP ‘Libra Rising’, a deeply personal five-track introduction built around transformation, queer identity, tenderness and the strange exhilaration of finding yourself somewhere new.

Leading the release is focus track ‘Honey Drunk’, which explores the experience of committed queer love after years of compulsory heterosexuality. What begins with the giddy intimacy of kissing a lover after a night out gradually opens into something more significant, as effie considers the difference between relationships that feel performative and those that allow her to exist more completely as herself.

That emotional shift is matched by the track’s production. Raw vocals and occasional vocoder effects sit among resonant guitars and warm synths, giving ‘Honey Drunk’ the closeness of a confession without losing the expansive dream-pop atmosphere running through the EP.

Produced by effie isobel alongside Benny Tamblin and Mario Späte, whose credits include Ziggy Ramo, Electric Fields and Montaigne, ‘Libra Rising’ was recorded at Pretty Good Studio on Kaurna Land. Across the record, effie moves through ideas of sapphism, empowerment, momentum and change, using candid songwriting as the anchor for layers of guitar and synth.

The EP brings together earlier singles ‘Higher Ground’, ‘Moon Made’ and ‘Hidden Treasure’ alongside ‘Honey Drunk’ and fan favourite ‘Slow Motion’. ‘Moon Made’ has already proved an important moment in effie’s emerging career, with its exploration of queer and gender-non-conforming identity and Greek migrant heritage earning Best Music Video at the 2025 SA Music Awards.

Founded in 2023, the effie isobel project draws from the worlds of beabadoobee, Slow Pulp, Snail Mail and Mazzy Star, where soft vocals can coexist with guitars that are considerably less polite. There are also cinematic touchstones in ‘I Saw The TV Glow’ and ‘Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’, adding another layer to the world she is building around the music.

That world is beginning to travel beyond Adelaide. effie has already appeared at WOMADelaide and St Kilda Festival, joined Lime Green Festival as triple j Unearthed’s surprise guest and supported artists including aleksiah, Teenage Joans, Darcie Haven and Coldwave. She has also been named a 2026 recipient of the Robert Stigwood Fellowship.

Now ‘Libra Rising’ is heading on the road. effie isobel begins her first headline tour with Sydney and Melbourne shows next week before returning home for an Adelaide date, with free under-18s pop-up events also taking place along the way.

For a debut EP concerned with transformation, it feels appropriate that ‘Libra Rising’ arrives at the point where effie isobel’s music is beginning to move beyond its home city. These songs document change from the inside; the next step is finding out how they take on a life of their own once other people start singing them back.
