Alternative dream-rock four-piece Leem of Earth have released ‘The Greatest Gift’, the first single from their forthcoming concept album SEE, a cinematic project inspired by George MacDonald’s Victorian-era fairy tale The Princess and Curdie. Marking the band’s return to new music, the track combines their ‘90s alternative rock roots with atmospheric dream-pop and a broader instrumental palette featuring instruments from around the world.
Written by vocalist Gileah Taylor, ‘The Greatest Gift’ draws on the story of Curdie, a young protagonist sent on a quest, exploring themes of uncertainty, purpose and personal discovery. Brooding and immersive, the song captures the anticipation of setting out into the unknown, balancing ethereal vocals and atmospheric textures with the drive of alternative rock.
The track began as a piano demo before each band member developed their individual parts, bringing the arrangement together in the studio. The result offers a first taste of the ambitious sound behind SEE, which expands the group’s established style with instruments including erhu, hammered dulcimer and Persian santoor.
“This song is inspired by a fairy tale and it talks about the turning point in the story of every person who is sent on a quest: will they or won’t they?” the band explains. “Of course, they usually don’t have a choice and are already on the quest.”
That idea of an unavoidable journey connects the single’s literary inspiration with contemporary life, providing a central thread for SEE. By drawing on MacDonald’s fantastical storytelling, Leem of Earth explore the moments of uncertainty and transformation that shape personal experience, suggesting that a journey can begin long before its purpose becomes clear.
The band features Gileah Taylor, Ben May, Nick May and Eric Taylor. Formed years after Gileah and guitarist Ben first met as teenagers in the late ‘90s, the group brings together influences spanning ‘90s alternative rock and the mid-2000s Florida music scene. Their contrasting musical backgrounds have helped create a sound that balances nostalgia with a willingness to experiment.
Leem of Earth previously released a trilogy of three-song EPs through Velvet Blue Music in 2018 and 2019, followed by two singles in 2022. SEE marks their most expansive project to date, bringing their alternative rock foundations into a concept album shaped by literary inspiration and international instrumentation.
