East London’s Lola Wild shares the cinematic new single ‘Bonnie & Clyde’.
Drawing on Spaghetti Western guitars, vintage soul and psychedelic production to create something both nostalgic and distinctly modern, the track balances Wild’s alt-pop tendencies and alternative-rock undertones whilst delivering radiant accessibility and mature musicality.
Written and produced by Lola herself, the track takes inspiration from the sonic language of the 1960s while refusing to remain confined to it. Ennio Morricone-inspired guitar work meets the rhythmic pulse of Motown and the warmth of vintage production, giving ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ the feel of a lost soundtrack to a film that never existed. At its centre is a story of devotion, tragedy and two lovers chasing freedom, with Lola turning familiar romantic mythology into something more surreal and personal.
The track began life in an unlikely form. A decade-old poem, rediscovered years later, provided the starting point for what would become Lola’s most ambitious release to date.
“The song actually started with a strange little poem I wrote about ten years ago. It began with the line, ‘I fell in love with a cowboy in the west, a lizard man with monsters on his chest.’ I think I was deep into The Doors at the time! When I rediscovered it years later, I’d been listening to a lot of The Supremes and Martha and the Vandellas, and I’d also fallen in love with Natalie Bergman’s latest record and the way she gives vintage soul this beautifully psychedelic edge. Suddenly that old poem felt like it belonged in this new musical world. I decided to produce the track independently, bringing my band in to record the live instrumentation before sending it to Steve Stout in Texas, whose mix really helped bring the whole vision to life”
That collision of influences is central to the song’s identity. Rather than simply recreating a vintage sound, Lola uses it as a foundation for something stranger and more contemporary, balancing live instrumentation with a dreamlike studio atmosphere. The mix comes from Texas-based producer and artist Steve Stout, whose contribution completes the track’s transatlantic production story.
The title and narrative also reflect Lola’s longstanding fascination with cinema. Growing up surrounded by soul records and classic films, she found particular inspiration in Arthur Penn’s 1967 crime drama Bonnie and Clyde, although her own song deliberately takes the story somewhere else.
“I grew up surrounded by Motown/soul records and old vintage cinema and westerns as a kid, and I was completely captivated by Arthur Penn’s 1967 Bonnie and Clyde; It became one of those films I’d return to again and again. I loved how romantic and doomed it felt, like two people running towards something they could never outrun. When I wrote ‘Bonnie & Clyde’, I wasn’t interested in recreating the film.”
Instead, Lola set out to build her own version of the doomed lovers mythology, drawing as much from Romeo and Juliet as from the American outlaw story.
“I wanted to imagine my own psychedelic version of it. I loved the idea of marrying the relentless heartbeat of Motown drums with Spaghetti Western guitars and dreamlike production to create something that felt nostalgic but slightly surreal. I also wanted to push the story further into Romeo and Juliet territory, where love becomes both the escape and the downfall.”
The result marks another step forward for an artist who has steadily built momentum across London’s live and independent music scenes. Lola Wild has already sold out shows at O2 Academy Islington, The Waiting Room, Crazy Coqs and SJQ, while live sessions at Black Barn Studios have seen her perform alongside members of Paul Weller’s band. Her growing profile has also attracted support from BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Introducing and Radio X, alongside editorial backing from Apple Music.
‘Bonnie & Clyde’ arrives as the follow-up to ‘On and On’, released in June and Lola’s first single since her 2025 EP ‘Lost Signal’. With her catalogue already accumulating hundreds of thousands of streams, the new single represents another significant marker in a trajectory that began with her 2023 debut ‘Rendezvous’.
