Mali returns with her fourth release of the year, ‘Spaceship’, offering a glimpse into her forthcoming third studio album, Where Was I?, set for release in November.
Darker, eerier and more sentimental than the first three singles, ‘Spaceship’ sees Mali explore the complexities of connection and belonging through a cinematic soundscape of spacious synths, luscious strings and emotive vocals which land with a cinematic sense of expanse and commercial accessibility. At its heart, the track is a ballad, built around pop sensibilities and rich, storybook-inspired songwriting, ultimately feeling as romantic and blissful as it does subtly ethereal. As the arrangement gradually unfolds, its layered instrumentation converges into a moody, ambitious climax, giving Mali the space to deliver a vocal performance that truly soars.
Discussing the single, Mali explains: “Spaceship is a love song for anyone who’s ever felt like a visitor in someone else’s world, close enough to see them clearly, but never quite brave enough to land. A song about wanting to connect while carrying the quiet belief that you don’t belong.”
The release signals a new creative chapter for the MTV Europe Award-winning songwriter, with ‘Where Was I?’ set to explore themes of identity, transformation and belonging. Written in Mumbai following her return in 2022, the album reflects a period of artistic development, with ‘Spaceship’ offering a poignant insight into the emotional landscape underpinning the wider project.
Collaborating with Keshav Dhar, who joined the team after recognising Mali’s songwriting credentials through a handful of demos, the forthcoming record promises to further develop her distinctive approach to storytelling and sound.
Mali’s growing international presence has seen her featured in the BBC’s Rhythms of India, alongside performances at SXSW, Music Matters Singapore, Le Zénith Paris, Wembley Arena and Lollapalooza India. She has also opened for Ed Sheeran and the Foo Fighters, building a live résumé that spans major stages and audiences around the world.
With ‘Spaceship’, Mali continues to push into more introspective territory, pairing atmospheric production intimate songcraft. With the full upcoming album Where Was I? in November, the single offers a compelling preview of an artist embracing vulnerability while expanding her creative horizons.
