NOFX have released ‘40 Years of F*ckin’ Up: Soundtrack + Score’ digitally, accompanying a documentary that charts four decades of one of punk rock’s most stubbornly independent careers.
The collection arrives as a sprawling companion to ‘40 Years of F*ckin’ Up’, the James Buddy Day-directed documentary that premiered at SXSW in March 2026 before being selected for the San Francisco International Film Festival and Cannes Film Market. Rather than sanding down the edges of the NOFX story, the film digs into the chaos, excess, humour and DIY mentality that followed Fat Mike, El Hefe, Eric Melvin and Erik Sandin throughout their career.
Its accompanying release is split into two parts, pairing an 11-track original score with a 15-song soundtrack. Fat Mike composed new material for the score alongside Matt Nasir, taking his writing beyond the breakneck punk that has defined much of NOFX’s catalogue.
There is plenty here for anyone more interested in the band’s less polished corners, too. Six rare and previously unreleased recordings appear across the collection, including a demo of ‘Secret Society’, the ‘On The Road’ demo and a cover of ‘La Bamba’. Live versions of ‘Linoleum’ and ‘NOFX’ sit alongside new material including ‘40 Years of F*ckin’ Up’ and ‘We Did It Our Way’.
The latter also gets a new live video, captured during NOFX’s final shows in San Pedro, California in 2024. Those performances brought the curtain down on the band’s touring career after more than 40 years, making the footage considerably more than another live clip pulled from the archives.
Director James Buddy Day sees the theatrical screenings as having developed into celebrations not only of NOFX but of the punk community that grew around them. That connection also runs through the band’s own reflections on the film, with Fat Mike characteristically unguarded about how much uncomfortable and deeply personal material made the final cut.
El Hefe, meanwhile, has described the project as an extension of the DIY approach NOFX followed throughout their career. The documentary was made without attempting to tidy up the band’s history for its final chapter, instead leaning into the mistakes, excesses and peculiarities that have always been inseparable from the music.
The physical edition of ‘40 Years of F*ckin’ Up: Soundtrack + Score’ arrives on October 2 as a deluxe double LP. It includes a 24-page retrospective photo book featuring rare and previously unseen images from across the band’s career, with original cover artwork by Tokyo Hiro.
For a band that spent four decades refusing to behave like punk rock was supposed to come with an instruction manual, a conventional retrospective was never particularly likely. ‘40 Years of F*ckin’ Up’ instead leaves the fingerprints, bruises and bad decisions intact, while its soundtrack reaches back through the music that made the whole unruly story possible.
