News: Powwow Step Pioneer Shub Shares New Single ‘Legacy’ Featuring DJ Paul and Nova Rx

The artist widely known as the “Godfather of powwow step,” Shub, makes a commanding return with his new single ‘Legacy (Feat. DJ Paul & Nova RX),’ out today via SHUB MUSIC. Formerly known as DJ Shub, the pioneering Indigenous producer once again reshapes the contours of contemporary electronic music, uniting cultures, genres, and generations in a track that lives up to its name. The release arrives ahead of his forthcoming two-part album Heritage, due May 1, 2026.

Shub has long stood at the forefront of a movement he helped create, blending traditional powwow singing and drumming with the force of modern bass music.COMPLEX praised the “pulse-pounding Canadian Indigenous drumming and spine-chilling traditional chants to satisfy fans of the powwow-step genre he helped pioneer”.

The single is built on contrast and coexistence. Shub’s heavy-hitting production, layered with powwow vocal samples and thunderous drums, provides the foundation for two distinct collaborators: DJ Paul of Three 6 Mafia and rising vocalist Nova Rx. DJ Paul’s hard-edged Southern rap delivery cuts through the beat with commanding presence, while Nova Rx counters with soaring melodies and introspective lyricism. The result is a charged yet cohesive soundscape that mirrors the track’s themes of lineage, identity, and evolution.

Lyrically, ‘Legacy’ wrestles with inheritance and self-determination. Nova Rx reflects on falling and rising, breaking frames and resisting limitation, choosing one’s own direction while acknowledging the weight of history. The song frames legacy not merely as something handed down, but as something actively shaped – forged through resilience, reflection, and intention.

“Legacy came together in a way that still blows my mind,” Shub shares. “We were talking about collaborators and someone threw out DJ Paul… my jaw literally hit the floor. Three 6 Mafia are legendary, so it just felt right for a song about lineage and impact. Then Nova Rx came in and the chemistry between all of us was unreal. Different worlds, same energy, all meeting in one track.”

For DJ Paul, the connection was instant. “What drew me to this track was the chill feel-good vibes at the beginning, and then the 0 to 100 rush that comes once the beat dropped… Once I heard that I was sold. Mafia!”

Nova Rx views the collaboration as something spiritual as much as musical. “‘Legacy,’ to me, is what starts to form when you begin to understand and use the connections between past & present, between nature & self, to transform your existence to a higher state,” he explains. “That’s what I tried to illustrate in my contribution. Big ups to Shub for pulling together such vast talent and coordinating collaboration on such a unique song, pushing boundaries to illustrate the dance between the natural rhythm of the earth and body, and the existentiality of the mind and soul.”

With ‘Legacy,’ Shub not only signals the next chapter of his career but also sets the tone for Heritage, a two-part album poised to further explore culture, ancestry, and innovation.
