19-year-old singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Sahej, shares the new single ‘Not Yet’.
Centred on a persistent acoustic-guitar arpeggio, the track gradually unfolds through delicate piano, sweeping strings, layered vocals, understated drums, synths and atmospheric production. Sahej’s restrained vocal delivery lends the song an intimate quality, while its ethereal soundscape gives his reflections room to breathe. The result occupies an emotional space familiar to listeners of Joji, Keshi, Billie Eilish and Bryant Barnes, yet remains grounded in Sahej’s own perspective and experiences.
Beneath its carefully layered arrangement, ‘Not Yet’ explores the tension between fear and determination. Rather than presenting vulnerability as something to overcome before taking action, Sahej embraces it as an inevitable part of moving forward. The song’s central message is not that fear disappears, but that it need not dictate the outcome.
As Sahej explains, “It’s a testament to the fears I have accumulated throughout my life, and the fact that my purpose will not change no matter how afraid I am. It’s in essence a song about admitting to a moment of weakness, and that the job will still be done once that moment subsides”.
That sense of purpose extends beyond his music. For Sahej, songwriting is closely connected to a desire to alleviate the suffering of others, drawing on difficult personal experiences to explore emotions that resonate more widely. His work reflects a search for understanding, meaning and connection, alongside the recognition that personal growth often begins with acknowledging the things that hold us back.
Away from music, Sahej is studying Neuroscience at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, pursuing two disciplines that might initially appear worlds apart but share a common interest in human experience. Whether through scientific study or songwriting, his focus remains on people, their emotions, their experiences and the ways in which they seek to understand themselves and one another.
With ‘Not Yet’, Sahej brings these interests together in a release that feels both deeply personal and broadly relatable. Its origins in creative frustration mirror its wider message: moments of doubt do not have to signal defeat, and uncertainty does not necessarily mean an individual is on the wrong path. Sometimes, acknowledging that you are not ready is the first step towards discovering what you are capable of.
Ultimately, ‘Not Yet’ is not a song about being fearless. It is about recognising fear, allowing it to exist and choosing to move forward regardless. For Sahej, the distinction is fundamental. Purpose does not depend on the absence of doubt, but on the willingness to continue once the moment of weakness has passed.
