London-based alternative electronic artist Sink returns with the beguiling and beautiful new single ‘Shallow’ (out April 25th), the latest offering from his much-anticipated debut album, Flaw State (out May 9th). Following a string of acclaimed releases on Ólafur Arnalds’ OPIA Community and Max Cooper’s Mesh label, Flaw State arrives ahead of a string of live dates supporting Rival Consoles.
A masterful blend of electronic textures, ‘Shallow’ explores the delicate tension between the relentless momentum of modern life and the serene pull of nature — portraying both as different shades of “shallow” experience. Dreamlike and fable-like, the track’s nursery rhyme-style lyrics contrast with emotive, dynamic production, offering a contemplative yet invigorating meditation on the simple, essential pursuit of rest.
Sink’s production shines with spacious, experimental sound design and inventive overlapping melodies, weaving a stunning, expansive soundscape rooted in emotional sincerity. Glitching synths, deep sub-bass, and intense distortions pulse against choppy beats, creating a rich interplay between organic imperfection and industrial electronic elements. Atop this sonic tapestry floats Sink’s melancholic falsetto, perfectly balancing dark, heavy textures with haunting, ethereal beauty.
Speaking about the new single, Sink shares: “‘Shallow’ is about the struggle to seek balance, in a world of hyperboles and extremes. It plays with the fragility of something pristine while allowing distortion and imperfection to seep through.”
The track features additional engineering by Nick Smart (Mammal Hands, Sunda Arc, Gondwana Records) and additional mixing by Cristiano Nicolini (Janus Rasmussen, Alessandro Cortini). Across Flaw State, Sink collaborates with an impressive range of artists: Rival Consoles lends additional production; classical and folk violinist Siobhán McCafferty contributes sweeping violin lines; experimental composer Robert Murray Jamieson adds textured bass clarinet; and mixing credits include Alex O’Donovan (Kelly Lee Owens) and Cristiano Nicolini.
Written and recorded over two years in his South-East London studio, Flaw State is described by Sink as “a weary journey towards acceptance, divided between horror and beauty, bringing flaws to the forefront of the process.” – The album navigates a striking sonic world where alternative pop, impressionism, and experimental electronica meet, a space where imperfection becomes its own form of beauty.
Sink’s momentum continues to build, with his previous work gaining support from Worldwide FM, OpenLab Radio, and Voices Radio, alongside placement on Spotify’s Deep Listening playlist. His compositions have also appeared in high-profile projects, from XBOX’s MotoGP25 and HBO Max shows to campaigns for Adidas (featuring Lionel Messi) and Respawn Entertainment. Currently, he’s collaborating with Adam Janota Bzowski (Black Mirror, Saint Maud) on the upcoming Netflix feature Night Always Comes directed by Benjamin Caron (Andor, The Crown, Sherlock).
