The Saints, one of the most iconic and controversial bands in Australian music history, are set to reunite this November in honour of the vinyl box set release of their 1977 debut classic, ‘(I’m) Stranded.’ This historic reunion will feature original members guitarist Ed Kuepper and drummer Ivor Hay, joined by a stellar lineup of honourary Saints: Mark Arm from the legendary Mudhoney, Peter Oxley of Sunnyboys fame on bass, and Mick Harvey, known for his work with The Birthday Party and Bad Seeds, on guitar. Together, The Saints ’73-’78 will revive the raw, electrifying sound of their first three seminal albums, ‘(I’m) Stranded’ (1977), ‘Eternally Yours’ (1978), and ‘Prehistoric Sounds’ (1978), bringing back the fire and fury that made them a touchstone in punk rock history.

“Rock music in the ’70s was changed by three bands—the Sex Pistols, the Ramones and the Saints”

Sir Bob Geldof

‘(I’m) Stranded,’ penned by Ed Kuepper and Chris Bailey in 1974, first hit the airwaves with mixed reactions. In September 1976, Jamie Dunn, later known as Agro the Puppet, panned the 7″ in Juke magazine. Contrarily, the UK magazine Sounds declared it Single of the Week three times between October and November 1976. Despite their limited live experience, having played just five public shows and a few private parties by the time they recorded the album in October 1976, The Saints quickly made their mark. In June 1977, they shared the stage at London’s legendary Roxy venue with a fledgling Tubeway Army. As 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the writing of ‘(I’m) Stranded’ and Ed Kuepper’s five decades as a live performer, the legacy of The Saints remains as potent and influential as ever.
