Desert-blues pioneers, Tinariwen, have announced an eight-date tour of New Zealand and Australia in May/June of this year. The tour begins in New Zealand before winging its’ way across the Tasman to span the breadth of Australia, from Hobart and Fremantle through to Brisbane and Adelaide with appearances at Vivid Festival in Sydney and Rising Festival in Melbourne along the way.

Tinariwen is a collective of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara region of northern Mali. The band was founded in 1979 by Ibrahim Ag Alhabib and along with bandmates Alhassane Ag Touhami and Abdallah Ag Alhousseyni have been performing and touring ever since. With 11 studio albums to their name, and over 1100 international appearances, the band continue to form part of the vanguard taking desert rock to the world.

Evolving from exiled rebels to global music icons, the Tuareg rock band renowned for their unique fusion of traditional desert blues, rock, and world rhythms have gone on to be awarded one Grammy Award along with a further two nominations, the last in 2020. Admired by their international peers, collaborations with renowned artists such as Thom Yorke, Robert Plant, Jack White and Warren Ellis have also ensued.

Their 2024 tour is the first since the release of the band’s ninth studio album, Amatssou (“Beyond The Fear”), a ground-breaking project that explores the deep-rooted connections between the desert blues of Tinariwen to the country music of rural America, Southern rock to German psych-rock.
