American reggae artist Trevy James will return this fall with Grey In The Beard, his long-awaited sophomore solo album and most expansive artistic statement to date. The nine-track LP blends lovers’ rock, vintage R&B, and roots reggae into a warm, meticulously crafted sound that underscores James’ emergence as one of the most distinctive new voices in the modern U.S. reggae landscape.
The album represents the culmination of an eight-year evolution for the second-generation reggae musician, who grew up immersed in the genre and has spent his career steadily refining his own musical identity.
Grey In The Beard is positioned as a patient, elegant reflection of James’ personal and artistic maturation—mirroring a real-life love story that recently reached its own milestone with his marriage. Musically, the record pulls from the harmonic warmth of lovers’ rock and the groove-driven sophistication of ’70s and ’80s soul and yacht-rock-era R&B. In contrast to contemporary production trends dominated by presets and digital workflows, James leans almost entirely on live instrumentation, lending the album a timeless, human character.
The LP follows a strong run of singles released across 2024 and 2025, each track highlighting a different facet of James’ stylistic growth, from melodic phrasing to chordal complexity, and the songs take on new depth when contextualised within the larger arc of the album. Together, they form a cohesive mosaic of groove, emotional clarity, and musicianship that rewards attentive listeners.
Reflecting on the project, James notes:v “This album is my most complete artistic statement to date. It took time to consolidate all of my different musical roles, influences, and visions into the style I was meant to create. My 2018 EP and 2020 LP were about taking the reins of my own life within music and never giving up on my dreams.”
