San Diego-based songwriter and recording artist Trevy James returns with a soulful, reggae-infused new single ‘If I Get a Chance’. Marking his second release of the year, the track is a warm, genre-bending groove that continues to build momentum as Trevy sets his sights on an impactful 2025 ahead of his forthcoming album, Gray In The Beard.
Driven by rich harmony, a prominent saxophone melodic theme, the track opens as a smooth jazz and R&B groove before making an unexpected and beautifully executed rhythmic shift at the midpoint which brings a reggae, offbeat feel. ‘If I Get a Chance’ is a dynamic blend of styles that reflects the dual musical world Trevy lives in—where reggae and soul constantly dance around each other. The result is a track that echoes the soulful intimacy of classic love songs by Michael McDonald and Dennis Brown whilst bringing a unique, playful flare.
Speaking about the single, he shares: “This record perfectly captures the stylistic tug-of-war between reggae and R&B that is constantly at play in my head whenever I sit down at the piano to write. I knew I needed to take this soulful R&B groover somewhere different in the verses, and I opted to just flip it completely on its head into a one-drop reggae groove. I’m very grateful to my writing partner, Psydecar’s Tim Pacheco, for his expertise in bringing that drastic change to life. His drum performance on this song was critical to the success of that arrangement move.”
