News: Psycroptic and Rivers of Nihil Unite for Australian Death Metal Tour

Two bands operating at the sharper end of modern death metal will share Australian stages this August when Tasmania’s Psycroptic and Pennsylvania’s Rivers of Nihil embark on a co-headline tour that leans equally on precision and sheer force.

For Psycroptic, the run arrives at a moment of sustained momentum. More than two decades into their career, the Hobart-born group continue to hold a singular place within the global technical death metal circuit. Recent singles ‘Architecture of Extinction’ and ‘Falling’ offer the first glimpse of their upcoming ninth studio album, due mid-year through Metal Blade Records, and suggest a band still pushing the mechanics of their sound forward.

Their reputation has been built through relentless touring. In recent years Psycroptic have taken their tightly coiled brand of extreme metal across the world alongside acts such as Dying Fetus, Six Feet Under and fellow Australians Ne Obliviscaris, reaffirming their role as one of the country’s most enduring heavy exports.

Rivers of Nihil arrive with their own surge of energy. The band’s 2025 self-titled album refined the expansive approach that first drew attention on Where Owls Know My Name, balancing technical aggression with atmospheric detail. Now fronted by bassist Adam Biggs, the group have entered a new phase that feels both streamlined and confident, with their signature saxophone textures still cutting through the density of their progressive arrangements.

The bill will be rounded out by two Australian support acts. Melbourne’s Growth bring the psychologically intense sound of their forthcoming release Under The Under (Part II), while Sydney outfit Slaughtercult add an uncompromising edge to the lineup.

Taken together, the tour reads like a snapshot of contemporary death metal in motion: technical, expansive and unafraid to stretch the genre’s boundaries without abandoning its brutality.
