Perth dark-pop artist Alexandria is leaning all the way into fantasy on new single ‘The Jester and The Queen’, a tale of forbidden romance dressed in medieval instrumentation and modern pop production.
Co-produced by Michael Keenan, the track arrives with considerable momentum already behind it. Teasers for ‘The Jester and The Queen’ have clocked more than one million views on TikTok, another sign of the increasingly international audience forming around Alexandria’s theatrical approach to pop.
The song drops its central characters into a relationship they know they should avoid but cannot quite escape. Rather than using its medieval setting simply as decoration, Alexandria builds the track around that world, incorporating accordion, harpsichord and period-inspired sound effects alongside contemporary pop production.
It is another step into the dark fantasy aesthetic that has increasingly become Alexandria’s calling card. The former maths teacher has made a remarkably quick leap from Perth classrooms to a dual deal with Warner Records US and Warner Music Australia, while her audience has grown to more than 1.7 million monthly listeners.
The numbers behind that rise are substantial. ‘Lust’, her collaboration with Marino, has passed 63 million streams, while ‘Always An Angel’ has topped 10 million. ‘Fire and Ice’ has reached more than 5.6 million and ‘The Fool’ has crossed two million.
With ‘The Jester and The Queen’, Alexandria is making the world around her music increasingly elaborate. Medieval romance, dark-pop melodrama and a thoroughly modern understanding of how a song can travel online all meet in the same place, giving her growing catalogue another distinctly theatrical turn.
