Liverpool blues-rock powerhouse The Heavy North return with ‘Alive’, a soulful, emotionally charged exploration of infatuation, uncertainty and the intoxicating feeling of finding someone who makes everything else disappear.
Blending blues-rock grit with their trademark soul and rock ‘n’ roll energy, the single captures the exhilaration of falling for someone without knowing whether those feelings are reciprocated. Rather than dwelling on the uncertainty, The Heavy North focus on the intensity of the connection, those moments when being close to someone makes everything else feel insignificant.
“‘Alive’ is essentially a love song about being infatuated with someone and not knowing if they feel the same love you feel for them,” the band explain. “A closeness and bond you share with someone almost makes you feel that nothing else in the world matters, and it can make you feel ‘alive’.”
Recorded in spring 2025 at guitarist and producer Jose Ibanez’s 3rd Planet Recording Studio in Granada, Spain, ‘Alive’ took shape during sessions for the band’s forthcoming third studio album. Further recording took place in Liverpool with drummer Mark Rice, before Martin Kuchta at Roughgrain Mastering completed the track in 2026.
The accompanying video brings the single back to the band’s hometown. Originally conceived around two passionate dancers in an empty venue, the idea evolved into a concept that reflects The Heavy North’s identity as a live band. Filmed by Luca Crispin at The Kazimier Stockroom in Liverpool and edited by Dan Hewitson, it creates the illusion of the group watching another version of themselves perform on stage.
Since forming in Liverpool in 2018, The Heavy North have built a reputation as one of the city’s formidable independent live acts, combining blues-driven songwriting with an instinctive feel for soul and rock ‘n’ roll. Their breakthrough single ‘Lying To Yourself’ attracted support from the late broadcaster Janice Long, who described the band as “absolutely brilliant”, ahead of their debut album, Electric Soul Machine, in 2022.
Second album Delta Shakedown followed in 2023, securing the band’s first Official UK Charts entries. The record reached number 19 on the Record Store Chart, number 45 on the Independent Albums Chart and number 10 on the Independent Album Breakers Chart. Their growing following culminated in a 1,200-capacity headline show at Liverpool’s Camp and Furnace, later captured on the live album and concert film Fire In The Furnace.
The band have continued to evolve since then. Bassist George Favager of The Mysterines joined in 2025, while Ibanez’s move to Granada opened up a new chapter in their recording process. The resulting Spanish sessions now provide the foundations for the group’s third album.
With ‘Alive’, The Heavy North tap into the vulnerability of wanting somebody, the uncertainty of wondering if they feel the same, and the rush of feeling unstoppable when the connection clicks. It is a universal subject delivered with the band’s characteristic blend of soulful emotion and rock ‘n’ roll drive.
As their third album takes shape, ‘Alive’ offers a compelling glimpse of what comes next: a band building on its Liverpool roots while embracing the possibilities of a new creative chapter.
