News: Joe Heartly Releases Debut Album ‘Down’

Joe Hearty has released his debut album, Down, a ten-track collection that finds charm and colour in the aftermath of profound personal change. Released via Slow Learner on October 16th, 2026, the record pairs dreamy production and an instinct for irresistible pop hooks with a more reflective undercurrent, tracing the complicated terrain of grief, memory and the search for direction after loss.

Featuring previously released tracks ‘Requiems’, ‘So Easy It’s Wrong’, ‘Simple Life’, ‘Just Keep Spinning’ and the recent single ‘Down’, the album balances playful arrangements with moments of striking emotional intimacy. Across its ten tracks, Hearty draws on the melodic sensibilities of Paul McCartney, the dramatic range of Scott Walker and the inventive arrangements of Jon Brion, shaping these influences into a sound that feels assured and distinctly his own.

At its most immediately captivating, ‘Only In My Dreams’ pairs crooner-style vocals with whimsical synth hooks and neat piano lines, while ‘Walk The World’ and ‘Painting Red’ take a more understated approach. The former nods towards the hazy, lounge-pop atmosphere of Arctic Monkeys’ ‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’, while the latter draws on the melodic warmth of mid-noughties pop-folk. Elsewhere, ‘Epiphany’ unfolds with cinematic grandeur, its luscious nylon strings and Broadway-inspired composition lending the track a sweeping, theatrical quality. ‘Little Fun’, by contrast, bursts with explosive energy, triumphant brass, playful strings and exuberant group harmonies, revealing the lighter, more mischievous side of Hearty’s songwriting.

Beneath the record’s colourful production lies a more personal story. Written in transit, across planes, train journeys and boats, the songs took shape during a period of reflection following a series of life-altering events. Memories of Hearty’s late father and the unfamiliar mundanity of life after loss inform the album’s emotional core, though its arrangements rarely allow that weight to become overbearing. Instead, moments of sadness sit alongside playful melodies and unexpected flourishes, finding beauty in the everyday without losing sight of the experiences that have reshaped it.

Reflecting on the album’s creation, Hearty explains: “I recorded most of the record in late 2024-2025, between Liverpool, London and Athens with an additional session in Hydra. It was a year or so fraught with various life-altering events, so it took me a while to finish it. In many ways, I think finishing the record helped me fully digest what had happened – or at least gave me a compass to navigate the last couple of years.”

That sense of searching for direction runs throughout ‘Down’, lending the album a quiet cohesion even as it moves between grand gestures, intimate balladry and buoyant pop. The songs feel shaped by the spaces in which they were written, carrying the perspective of someone trying to make sense of change while remaining open to the small pleasures that persist around it. There is a lightness to Hearty’s approach, but never a lack of feeling; even the most exuberant moments are grounded in the record’s wider emotional landscape.

With its blend of melodic confidence, imaginative production and deeply personal songwriting, ‘Down’ marks a compelling introduction to Joe Hearty’s musical world. Full of colour, life and moments of necessary pause, the debut offers a portrait of an artist finding his footing through music, transforming difficult experiences into something warm, vivid and unexpectedly uplifting.
