News: SKIP-DAWG Makes Return With ‘Lyrical Playboy’

After eight major surgeries and nearly a decade away from music, veteran rapper SKIP-DAWG is reclaiming his voice with new single ‘Lyrical Playboy’, a confident rap-R&B duet that explores identity, self-expression and the alter ego that emerges when he steps behind the microphone.

Blending introspective verses with a sensual R&B hook and touches of alternative rock, the track delivers a sleek, cinematic sound that balances vulnerability with swagger. At its heart is the contrast between the man SKIP-DAWG is in everyday life and the more assured, expressive character he channels through his music.

“‘Lyrical Playboy’ is really about the two sides of me,” SKIP-DAWG explains. “There’s the regular person I am in everyday life, and then there’s SKIP-DAWG, a more confident and expressive version of myself that comes out through the music.”

The release marks a significant moment for an artist whose career was brought to an abrupt halt by a life-threatening lung condition. Having already released five albums, SKIP-DAWG spent close to a decade away from recording after experiencing more than 20 collapsed lungs and undergoing eight major lung surgeries. He continues to live with significant nerve damage and severe chronic chest pain as a result of his medical history.

His return to music is therefore about more than rediscovering a creative outlet. SKIP-DAWG is also determined to raise awareness of the condition he refers to as Bleb Disease and the often devastating reality faced by people living with recurrent collapsed lungs.

“After living with Bleb Disease for 20 years, after having tried an extraordinary number of measures to manage my chronic health and lung issues, and now after having read thousands of personal accounts astonishingly similar to mine, I feel resolved to speak on behalf of a club that no one wants to belong to: collapsed lung sufferers,” he says.

“Our condition is marked by extraordinary, life-interrupting pain and trauma, from the initial lung collapse to the medical interventions and surgeries, lengthy and painful recoveries, and all-too-frequent complications like nerve damage.”

Through the Collapsed Lung Project and his own experiences, SKIP-DAWG hopes to bring greater visibility to a community whose struggles can remain largely unseen. His advocacy offers a personal dimension to his musical comeback, turning years of physical hardship into an opportunity to connect with others facing similar challenges.

Against this backdrop, ‘Lyrical Playboy’ takes on an added significance. Its mid-tempo production moves between introspection and playful self-assurance, while the infectious R&B refrain captures the confident, expressive side of the rapper that illness forced him to put on hold. Rather than dwelling solely on the years lost, the track looks towards what remains possible when an artist finds his way back to the music.

Originally from Havertown, Pennsylvania, SKIP-DAWG has built a catalogue spanning five albums, with his music featuring across platforms and outlets including NBC, the NFL and Grand Theft Auto. His latest release reconnects with that musical identity while introducing a renewed sense of purpose shaped by his experiences away from the spotlight.

With ‘Lyrical Playboy’, SKIP-DAWG is embracing the freedom to explore different sides of himself, combining the charisma of his musical alter ego with the perspective gained through years of serious health challenges. His return is both a creative revival and a chance to advocate for people living with recurrent collapsed lungs, giving a deeply personal story a wider audience.

Find out more about SKIP-DAWG’s experiences with recurrent collapsed lungs and his awareness campaign through the Collapsed Lung Project on Instagram and his personal website.
