Premiere: Liverpool’s Sienne reveal new single – Side By Side

Liverpool band Sienne are preparing to release their third single ‘Side By Side’ on Friday 17th July, following the success of previous singles ‘Coming Alive’ and ‘Where Is Home?’, and we’re delighted to premiere it right here on Backseat Mafia today.

The four-man band from Warrington have made an impressive entrance to the music scene so far, releasing indie rock singles taken from their as-yet-untitiled upcoming EP.

Sienne are primarily focused on creating indie tracks, taking influence from The Stone Roses and Manic Street Preachers, as well as more recent acts such as Blossoms and Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

‘Side By Side’ is an emotive track, taking a steady pace compared to the band’s previous releases. The style of this track would be appreciated by fans of music from Elbow, early Coldplay, The Hunna and The Courteeners.

The intricate vocals that open the track set the tone for the remainder, as layers of sound are added gradually and then taken away alternatingly.

The fluctuation between sturdy vocals and heavy guitar/ loud drumbeats gives the track a fiery dynamic, working harmoniously to ensure the message behind the lyrics are heard.

The grunge guitar riff that appears throughout ‘Side By Side’ gives the track a subtle rock quality, despite its steady nature.

‘Side By Side’ carries a relatable message, with lyrics that offer a personal perspective from frontman Calan Nickle.

Speaking on the inspiration behind ‘Side By Side’, Nickle said:

“I wrote this song just under a year ago after finding clarity from a low point in my life, I found myself asking why I was writing constantly about the negatives. I had a little moment where I began to see things clearer and this song was written as a message to myself to let go of all the rubbish going on in my head and that I should embrace the new things happening. I wanted the song itself to match the lyrics in how it starts as a no holds barred cry for help, and the understanding comes as the song progresses. For me the song itself is a long, long road from being in a bad place to finding clarity and I think it came to life once we’d finished it in the studio, it’s a very personal song and one that defines what we are as a band, it came from nothing, a darker place and ventured forward into the unknown.”

The future looks bright for Sienne, who’s previous singles have been played on BBC Introducing Merseyside among other independent radio stations globally. Additionally, there track ‘Where is Home?’ was premiered at the Liverpool vs Manchester United match back in January 2020.
