See: I am Lono release video for Only Love

Nottingham avant electro dup I am Lono, aka Matthew Cooper and David Startin have a new six-track self-titled EP out on white vinyl and download on 22nd August through Louder City Records. Named after the moment in Hunter S Thompsons book, The Curse of Lono, where Thompson captures a huge Marlin and beats it to death with a Samoan war club before returning to shore screaming triumphantly: ‘I am Lono’, the duo cite their influences (as well as Hunter S Thompson) as John Carpenter, The Doors, David Bowie, Suicide, Kraftwerk, Bukowski and David Lynch, and make music that they describe as claustrophobic, pounding, paranoid pop music gold.

From the EP, the band have released a video for the track Only Love. It opens with a touch of the Peter Hooks about it, before moving into synth heavy Cure territory, as lines of synths shiver in and out of the mix, the sense of anxiety noticeable in the vibe. Over the top the vocal dark but it decorates this perfect pop melody. As the synths swoon and swirl around it, its the melody that really hits you and takes you off into epic, memorable electro-pop territory. It’s that good.

Check out the video, directed by acclaimed Notts director, Dave Lilley. It sees the band in a house party made up entirely themselves. Weird but good.
