How cool is Kali Uchis? Answer, very cool as it happens. Still only 22 the Columbia born, Los Angeles based artist has already worked with the likes of Major Lazer, Snoop Dogg, Tory Lanez and Tyler, The Creator, while her 2013 projects Drunken Babble and Por Vida, featured production from Diplo, Tyler, The Creator, Kaytranada, BADBADNOTGOOD and more.
Taken from her forthcoming debut album, Only a Girl features Vince Staples and The Internet’s Steve Lacy and was produced by Kaytranada. It’s full of 80s sounding synths, RnB flavours and this scattering percussion as over the top Uchis and her guests deliver candy flavoured RnB pop. On the video, Kali Uchis (who directed it, with co-direction from Valentine Street) says, “I was inspired by fake love, Edie Sedgwick, Nancy Sinatra and Calle 13. The video speaks on how disposable/replaceable ‘lovers’ are treated and the things we will say/do out of loneliness.”
