Ahead of their first album for 20 years – Kristina, due out on Labrador on June 17th, and their first ever UK show at Indietracks Festival in Derbyshire (29-31 July), Swedish C86/Indie-pop veterans Red Sleeping Beauty complete another first – their first video ever, for the single If you want Affection. The quartet first got together in Stockholm in 1989 and are singer Kristina Borg, singer/guitarist Niklas Angergård (Acid House Kings), guitarist Mikael Matsson (The Shermans) and bassist Carl-Johan Näsström. Taking their inspiration from the C86/Sarah records bands, they went on to release a couple of albums and a flurry of EP’s and singles.
Its full of retro synths, aka early Depeche Mode and OMD, having allowed themselves only one acoustic guitar for the recording of Kristina. It’s full of rather lovely boy/girl vocals and this bubbling accompaniment, all wrapped up in a touch of melancholy and simple but impossibly catchy melodies.
The video was directed by Swedish sneaker brand Mucker. As Niklas Angergard from the band explains: “This is our first music video ever, so we wanted it to be special. As we’re the most indie band we know, we even took our name from 80s Marxist band McCarthy, we wanted pure commercialism for our video. Anything else would be predictable. Mucker have a knack for creative chaos, so we asked them. WE LOVE IT! ”
