Arriving as the follow-up to May’s ‘Promise (When You Go)’, ‘Take Me to Sunrise’ continues to establish the Los Angeles duo’s knack for balancing polished pop hooks with darker emotional undercurrents. Accompanied by a dreamlike video set against a dystopian backdrop, the track pairs Justine Dorsey’s expressive vocals with glossy production, capturing a yearning for moments that have already slipped away.
The album marks a significant milestone for After, whose story began in an unlikely place. Formed in 2023 after Dorsey and Graham Epstein met on the dating app Hinge, the pair quickly realised they weren’t destined to become a couple. Instead, they found a creative chemistry that has since evolved into one of indie pop’s more intriguing new partnerships.
Fell Asleep in the Sun is described as a collection of interconnected experiences that reflects where the duo find themselves today. Across the record, After explore impermanence, memory and the challenge of building a future that feels authentic, examining how people hold onto what matters as time inevitably moves forward.
Their rapid rise has been equally unconventional. Early singles including ‘Obvious’, ‘Ever’ and ‘300 Dreams’ earned praise from Rolling Stone, before 2024’s After EP introduced the duo to a wider audience. They followed with After EP 2 in 2025, featuring ‘Deep Diving’ and ‘Outbound’, the latter landing on Zane Lowe’s 26 for ’26 playlist. More recently, their music has featured in Apple campaigns while the band fronted a campaign for Gap, signalling a steady expansion beyond the indie scene.
With Fell Asleep in the Sun, After appear poised to build on that momentum. If ‘Take Me to Sunrise’ is any indication, the duo are continuing to refine a sound that blends pop immediacy with emotional depth, offering another promising glimpse of a debut album shaped by reflection as much as reinvention.
