Betty Taylor know exactly how a bad idea can become an irresistible one. The Queensland indie-pop four-piece return with ‘Fall Right Back’, a bright, immediate new single about recognising every warning sign in a relationship and diving straight back in anyway.
Fronted by Sophie Patrick alongside Kayla Smart, Claire Chittick and Katie Ishaque, Betty Taylor have built much of their appeal around melodies that arrive with an easy sweetness while the emotions underneath tend to be considerably messier. ‘Fall Right Back’ fits neatly into that world, turning the push and pull of a toxic situationship into something deliberately upbeat.
Patrick describes the song as capturing that familiar cycle where somebody becomes interested precisely when the other person starts pulling away. Attraction overrides common sense, red flags become remarkably easy to ignore and everyone involved probably knows how the story ends. ‘Fall Right Back’ finds Betty Taylor embracing that contradiction rather than trying to resolve it.
The track was co-written with Graham Ritchie and Blake Malone during their first writing session together, with the song taking shape in a single day. Longtime Betty Taylor collaborator Aidan Hogg later joined the process, co-producing and mixing the track from his Los Angeles studio.
It arrives after Betty Taylor made their US debut with a main-stage appearance at California’s BottleRock Festival, where this year’s bill included Lorde, sombr and Teddy Swims. It is another sizeable marker for a band that began in the small Sunshine Coast beach town of Mudjimba and has rapidly found itself travelling well beyond Queensland.
Their touring history now stretches across Australia, the US, UK, Europe and Ireland, with appearances at Live at Leeds, Groovin the Moo, Big Pineapple Festival, The Aussie BBQ and Good Gumnuts alongside BottleRock. They have also toured or appeared with girl in red, Jensen McRae, The Rubens, Boy & Bear, Beddy Rays, The Buoys and Teenage Dads.
That momentum has followed them offstage too. Betty Taylor have picked up airplay from triple j and BBC Radio 1, reached the top 15 at NACC and alternative radio in the US, and accumulated more than four million streams across their debut EP and standalone single ‘Sucker Punch’.
‘Fall Right Back’ is already finding its way into the band’s live set, and Betty Taylor are giving it plenty of room to breathe over the coming months. Headline release shows take them to Sydney’s Waywards Ballroom on August 27, Melbourne’s Yah Yahs on August 28 and Brisbane’s Black Bear on August 29.
They then head back onto the road as main support for The Dreggs, beginning at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on October 1 before shows in Kingscliff, Brisbane, Torquay, Melbourne and Adelaide. The run concludes at Perth’s Metropolis on November 7.
