Track: Dissonance and Desperation: The Maggie Pills Return with ‘Velobell’

Maggie Pills

Backlit by chaos and soaked in urgency, Melbourne’s The Maggie Pills return with their blistering new single ‘Velobell’ — a serrated blend of punk menace and grunge melancholy that pulls no punches and asks for no forgiveness.

Fronted by the magnetic Delfi Sorondo, the track opens with dissonant guitars and a breathy, haunted vocal delivery that quickly mutates into a full-blown wall of sound. There’s something unnerving in the build — a tension that crackles beneath every chord — before erupting into a chorus that’s more war cry than hook. The track was produced and co-mixed by drummer Mario Perez and mastered by Grammy heavyweight Emerson Mancini (Kendrick Lamar, Paramore.)

The accompanying video is no less disorienting. Directed by Perez and edited by Sam Mapplebeck (Amyl and the Sniffers, Tropical Fuck Storm), it plunges the viewer into a surreal, strobe-lit forest where the camera never blinks. Overexposed shots, suffocating close-ups, and dizzying handhelds pull you into the emotional freefall.

Formed in 2019 by Sorondo and Perez after immigrating from Argentina and Venezuela respectively, The Maggie Pills have quickly carved out a name with their relentless live shows and uncompromising vision. They’ve shared stages with Black Lips, Cable Ties, The Meanies and Private Function, and will launch Velobell at Melbourne’s John Curtin Hotel on Friday, June 13.
