There’s a sense of rediscovery running through ‘Good Friend’, the latest single from Chicago-based singer-songwriter Gia Margaret. The track arrives ahead of her forthcoming album Singing, due April 24 via Jagjaguwar, and captures the moment an artist returns to the thing they feared they might lose forever: their voice.
The song follows the gentle momentum of lead single ‘Everyone Around Me Dancing’, but where that track drifted through quiet reflection, ‘Good Friend’ feels brighter, more playful. Built around piano, subtle electronics and unexpected textures, it carries traces of late-90s pop experimentation alongside Margaret’s delicately poised vocal.
Recorded with producer Guy Sigsworth, known for work with artists such as Björk, Madonna and Seal, the track weaves together unlikely elements: Gregorian chant contributions from ILĀ, fleeting turntable scratches and soft melodic fragments that slowly gather into something quietly celebratory.
Margaret first wrote the song in 2019 after her first major US tour, long before the uncertainty that would eventually shape her next chapter. During the recording of Singing, she rediscovered the track while searching for something lighter in the studio, a reminder of the people who anchor her through periods of doubt.
That context adds weight to the album itself. A vocal injury once forced Margaret to step away from singing altogether, redirecting her creativity into instrumental work. Records such as Mia Gargaret and Romantic Piano explored the emotional possibilities of ambient composition, building a language of sound while her voice healed.
Now, with Singing, she returns to the microphone for the first time since 2018’s There’s Always Glimmer. The album was recorded across Chicago, London and Eau Claire with an expansive circle of collaborators including David Bazan, Amy Millan, Deb Talan, Kurt Vile and Sean Carey, while longtime collaborator Doug Saltzman co-produces much of the record.
