The laughing, frowning mask’s play … prologue from Schiller’s Wallenstein

Berlin artist Pilocka Krach brilliantly presents her new album with the first act of Faust III. The number 3 defines the entire work’s theme: 3 titles for 3 acts makes for 3 singles and 3 releases on 7 inch and digital – the album. The musician Pilocka Krach hereby forms the image and idea of art and magic – and here in particular, art’s intrigue with Mephista.A joke in all earnest. The fist does not stand metaphorically for any right of the mighty but – rather to the contrary – for permeation.

Pilocka’s play on the mask is, as always, hefty and light. Citing theater, a curtain rising, is deliberate and the musical Faust theme playing along with inappropriate genres like Pop, Songwriting, Club, Techno, Electronic and the like is indeed more of a game than permeation.

The first act’s 3 titles are full of innuendos: “Burning Down the House in the Middle of the Street” follows “Hey Party People” making us wonder, Hey! does the party start now, or are Party People being addressed? Colons, words, meanings, rhymes are twisted, can and will be twisted. As in partly loose and unhinged, partly complex productions with hidden meaning – always a beat but mostly without metal. Hihat. There’s steam (but no kettle), cool gallantry, very chic. Too edgy for an excited audience? Or, as in Dr. Faustus, a sign to leave the room? No!, it’s not like that at all. This is fun and the visuals highlight a light arch from the 1980s to the 2030s – synthesizers, guitars, beats, echos and corners make the scene here. The third part of Pilocka Krach’s first act of Faust III features Berlin’s Grande Dame, Gudrun Gut, with an amazingly cool homage to…the wind.

May what wants to vanish, vanish – in an unending storm of noise, Pilocka’s world is quietly permeated by the volume of “Der Leichte Wind”.

Verdict:

Tracks: Solid beats with a strutting club tempo, gives ‘Hey Party people’ prime position as the opener, packed with extra flavour from vocals by ‘noun’. On the flip ‘Burning Down The House’ Carries on the head nodding kicking percussion and infectious synth work, while ‘Der Leichte Wind’ gets a bit more layered with effected guitar giving an alluring ominous edge, while the sultry vocals of ‘Gudrun Gut’ fit the mood perfectly. Grab the limited vinyl while you can for a mouth watering slice of electronica, served with a side of Berlin cool.
