Like some dark demonic apparition, Edith Thomas Furey‘s new track ‘Evenings in the Park with Charles (Part 3)’ looms in the darkness of the night with a brooding, foreboding prowl, close to the ground with teeth bared. It is an absolutely delicious piece of post punk gloom – a roaming throbbing bass, crystal-cut guitars that are dissonant and haunting and a sparse open, ethereal pace with Furey’s voice an echoing distant drone.
There are of course gothic hints – hints of early Cure, Bauhaus and even Joy Division with the Arctic chills and studied indifference, but Furey has draped his own cold visage on this particular skull and it is enticing and thrilling in its stature.
In contrast to the sombre tone, the song is delightfully about something far more endearing and joyous: it is part of a larger song cycle inspired by Charles (a friend’s greyhound, as featured on the cover art) and the park in which Edith and Charles often spend time of an evening. I love this cognitive dissonance.
