Track: Large Mirage unleash ‘Wildfire’ ahead of BIGSOUND and international tour

Large Mirage have spent much of 2026 making increasingly difficult-to-ignore noise. Now the Sydney rockers are keeping the foot down with new single ‘Wildfire’, arriving just as the band prepares to take its live show from BIGSOUND to Scotland.

It has already been quite a year. Large Mirage opened both of AC/DC’s sold-out shows at Sydney’s Accor Stadium, supported TISM at PICA, sold out their own Sydney and Melbourne headline dates and appeared at Woodford Folk Festival, Lost Paradise, King St Summer Crawl and Meatstock. That is some serious mileage for a band whose reputation has increasingly been built on what happens once they get onstage.

‘Wildfire’ catches some of that energy on record. Produced by Michael Badger, whose credits include King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Amyl & The Sniffers, You Am I and Full Flower Moon Band, the track was recorded without a click, allowing its guitars and rhythms to breathe rather than sanding everything down into digital perfection. Big riffs and an immediate chorus remain at the centre, but there is more going on beneath the surface.

The song reaches back to the Black Summer bushfires of 2019, when singer and guitarist Kolya Chan was living in the Blue Mountains. A trip to jam with bassist Blake Rochester at a studio in Tennyson took Chan straight towards the fires tearing through the Hawkesbury, an experience that stayed with him.

“This one is very introspective for me,” Chan says. “It’s about seeing how bushfires affect communities and in turn communities rebuild after, it is about banding together and being able to overcome almost anything.”

Rather than dwelling entirely on the devastation, ‘Wildfire’ looks at what happens afterwards: communities rebuilding, people pulling together and the stubborn determination to keep moving. Chan also sees the song more broadly as an argument for seizing whatever life puts in front of you.

Large Mirage aren’t wasting much time putting that philosophy into practice. Their ‘Wildfire’ single tour begins at Brisbane’s BIGSOUND on September 3, where they play the Oztix BIGSOUND Party, before heading through Queensland and New South Wales.

The itinerary gets considerably more unusual from there. They board Rock The Boat for its Sydney-to-Noumea cruise in October, hit Newcastle’s Crafted Festival in November and then make a substantial leap north in April 2027, when they head to Kirriemuir, Scotland for Bonfest.

That final date feels particularly apt for a band that has just shared an enormous Sydney stage with AC/DC. Bonfest celebrates the life and music of late AC/DC frontman Bon Scott in the Scottish town where he spent his early childhood, giving Large Mirage another connection to the rock lineage that has shadowed their extraordinary year.

The danger for any young band steeped in classic rock is becoming trapped by the records sitting on the shelf behind them. Large Mirage increasingly sound less interested in imitation than in working out what they can drag from that history into their own music. ‘Wildfire’ catches them doing exactly that, while their rapidly expanding touring schedule suggests they won’t be standing still long enough to admire the view.
