Track: Maripool – Not Today

Carina Simões

London-based, Lisbon-born ‘one girl band’ Maripool, real name Natacha Simões, has announced her second EP ‘a day that feels like nothing at all’ which is due out on the 7th of June via Smoking Room. In anticipation, she has shared her new single ‘not today’ taken from the EP.

Recorded, mixed and produced by Euan Hinshelwood – of Cate Le Bon’s backing band – with Simões herself playing every instrument bar bass and violin, at the track’s core lies a stagnating depression, and itching feeling of being caught in a stasis, as Simões pithily explains:

“It’s a song about when everything around you is bringing you down. When the days roll into one another, nothing ever changing.”

Atmospheric and melancholic the track is an impressive mixture of swirling melodies and thought provoking lyrics. Morphing into a guitar led lofi indie that is a perfect introduction to Maripool. Don’t let the lofi fool you though, this is a well crafted and complex track and one that will no doubt see her pick up some new fans.
