Track: Melenas – Primer Tiempo

‘Primer Tiempo’, the new single from Pamplona, Spain’s power pop garage band Melenas, is a panacea for our weird pandemic world. It is a synth-driven piece of pop perfection that bounces and gambols along seemingly without an earthly concern, and yet antithetically, the vocals are infused with the sort of melancholia I love and appreciate.

Featuring layered, ethereal vocals that float and glide above the otherwise low-fi bubbling synth pop flow, ‘Primer Tiempo’ is an absolute unadorned delight. The band says:

The song talks about the moment before making a decision, the moment BEFORE EVERYTHING. You are in your bedroom, and you feel there is a fight between your dreams and your desire to make them happen. You walk around your bedroom and you listen to songs that talk about the same feelings that you have, just to encourage yourself to ‘do it, do it, do it, tell that person something now!’ When you finally do it, it works! Later, you will remember that moment, which was the Primer tiempo, the first time.”

The simple, endearing video captures the feeling perfectly, with its eighties feel and simple depictions of home life:

This is pure pop brilliance.

The song is off Melenas’s forthcoming album “Dias Raros’ due out on 4 May 2020 through Trouble in Minds Records and can be preordered here.
