Playlist: Sparks’ Dieter Meier picks out some of his favourite music videos for Backseat Mafia

It’s been quite a journey. As he approaches his seventh decade, Dieter Meier can look back on a life well lived. Conceptual artist, lyricist, singer and one half of influential electronic band Yello, that is only one string to his bow. Add to that video director, billionaire industrialist, member of the Swiss national golf team, professional poker player, actor and restaurateur and you begin to understand that this is one extraordinary man.

Not that he’s resting on his laurels. This year he’s brought out his debut solo album ‘Out of Chaos’ on the Straatskat label, an album of beauty, and alternating moments of simplicity and complexity. As well as electronic elements, there are folk and classical influences as well, as Meier paints serene soundscapes and touching ballads as well as ‘esoteric oddities’.

Ahead of his appearance this coming Tuesday at Jazz Cafe in London, he’s given us exclusive access to a list of his favourite tracks and videos. It’s full of legendary names through a range of styles and genres (interestingly, no electronic music), including a number of live performances. The artists featured are Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Eric Burdon, Tiny Tim, Captain Beefheart, Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Presley, Miles Davis, Roy Orbison and The Ramones.

Settle down with some of the most iconic figures in pop music history for an hour or so, picked exclusively for Backseat Mafia by the similarly iconic Dieter Meier. Then, whatever you do, get yourself a ticket for Tuesday in London, here.
