Live Review: Fuzzy Sun / Twenty Eighth Club / Danny Mellin – Sidney and Matilda- Sheffield 2.12.2021

A chilly December night saw a trip down to Sheffield’s Sidney and Matilda for what promised to be a tremendous night of entertainment given the headline and supports on offer.

First up was Oxfords Danny Mellin who is currently studying at Uni in Sheffield and has become a very welcome addition to the local music scene. Danny and his excellent band took to the stage playing through a set of original tunes. Catchy guitar riffs supported by a strong rhythm section set the tone. A musician myself, I appreciated some of the technical parts of the set with some great chops and solid playing from drummer James Gild and bass player Elliot Bolton. A charismatic stage presence and competent guitar work from Danny sealed the deal. Check out Danny’s latest single ‘His Favourite Sweatshirt’ and recent EP ‘Streets of Nowhere’ his website www.dannymellin.com and catch them live as soon as you can.

Next up was Twenty Eighth Club a Barnsley based indie Rock and Roll Band. Clearly glad to be back on the live scene after recent events, the bands energy and enthusiasm shone through. The crowd were treated to a solid set of catchy well written and infectious tunes. A high standard of musicianship was on display with the band working well together to create their own unique sound. Something I appreciate when watching live music is the bands interaction with an audience, often overlooked this wasn’t the case here. Singer Joseph Slack had great stage presence and the lads got a strong response from the Sidney and Matilda crowd.  Check out their singles Easy, Lost in Conversation, Rebound and Talk on Spotify and other platforms and catch them live soon.

Hailing from Stockport Fuzzy Sun were on their second date of a six-date headline UK tour. Having already supported the likes of The Blossoms, Inhaler and Two Door Cinema Club it was pretty clear that we were in for a treat.

Having listened to the band’s latest EP ‘Since the Dog Died’ I was familiar with some of the songs already. Catchy opening tune ‘Fake it’ sets the scene with a solid collection of songs to follow that truly deserve to be heard by a wider audience.

Onto the live performance.. and what can I say, lead singer Kyle Ross took to the stage and immediately had the crowd in his hands with fantastic stage presence a high energy performance followed. A photographer’s dream the band performed well, with solid backbeats, infectious tunes and competent playing all round. By the closing song the crowd were cheering for more having been treated to a fantastic set.

On first watch I was really impressed by Fuzzy Sun who in my opinion are a ‘must see’ band, check them out at your earliest opportunity. Listen to the latest album on all major platforms and for more UK tour information and tickets see www.fuzzysunband.com
