Meet: Neural Dance’s Neil Mykowski

Alternative electronic rock band Neural Dance are setting up to have a great 2023 with new music expected later this year. We caught up with the bands founder Neil Mykowski to learn a little about them.

Give us a potted history of the band

Neural Dance started initially in 2018 as my solo project performing with an laptop but this year the addition of Mark on guitar and Phil on drums we have become a more dynamic and focused unit.We have a recently started work on a new single called ‘Psychogeography’ and are looking to get out gigging and raising our profile.

Who inspired you to start making music

A bit obvious maybe but I’d say hearing Nirvana’s ’Nevermind’ made me realise that I could have a go at being a musician, also it made me realise there was current rock music that had the same spirit and attitude as the Sex Pistols and all the other punk stuff my dad used to play.

And the one or maybe two records that inspired you artistically

Joy Division’s ‘Unknown Pleasures’ a timeless classic that mixes electronic and organic rock sounds seamlessly. Nine Inch Nail’s ‘With Teeth’ my gateway album to Trent Reznor’s amazing catalogue, probably one of his most accessible works but really powerful stuff with Dave Grohl on the kit, like with Joy Division it’s that merging of Rock and electronica that fascinates me.

If you’re trying to explain who you sound like to someone that’s never heard you, what do you say

I never know who to reference! we’re alternative rock with elements of electronica so if that’s sounds appealing who am I to stand in the way! give us a listen!

Tell us about your new track

Our new single is called ‘Psychogeography’ it’s about someone blaming or using their geographical location as an excuse for their emotional state.

Tell us how you write

I have used several ways of writing, sometimes just straight from a bass line or guitar riff and then other times it’ll be via programming a synth or drum pattern and layering sounds up.Sometimes writing with an instrument you aren’t familiar with or can’t play well (like piano in my case)can conjure up some interesting results as well.

Lyrics used to be a old school analogue pen and notepad scenario but I have to admit I’ve written a fair amount on my phone recently, as long as it’s good is all that matters to me at the end of the day!

Tell us about your live show

Playing live now with the addition of Mark and Phil to the line up has been great we have been adopting some of the more electro based early tracks and it’s been going down really well, the reaction to the new stuff has been great as well so we’re excited to get out there and build on the chemistry we already have. We’d love the chance to play some big stages at a Summer Festival like Reading/Leeds I personally would love to support one of my favourite bands like NIN or Therapy? that would be a dream come true!

What can we expect from you in the near future

We aim to have the new single ‘Psychogeography’ out in August and we aim to promote that as much as we can online and through gigging as well.

Tell us your favourite records that are rocking your headphones/tour bus / stereo

I’m currently listening to the new Ruts DC album ‘Counterculture?’ Santigold’s ‘Spirituals’ and Trianglecut’s ‘Forest Danse’ E.P
