For the first time in 15 years, CAKE are heading back to Australia, bringing one of alternative rock’s most distinctive catalogues to stages around the country. The Sacramento outfit will perform An Evening with CAKE, a special theatre show featuring two full sets that trace more than three decades of genre-defying music.
CAKE have always occupied a category of their own. Since emerging in the early 1990s, the band has fused dry wit, razor-sharp social observation and an unlikely mix of rock, funk, country, folk and pop into a sound that remains instantly recognisable. Songs such as The Distance, Short Skirt/Long Jacket, Never There, Frank Sinatra and their unforgettable reimagining of I Will Survive have become enduring staples, balancing sardonic humour with infectious grooves.
That independent streak has defined every aspect of the band’s career. Operating outside industry expectations, CAKE continue to write and record from their solar-powered Sacramento studio, a facility that frequently produces more energy than it consumes. Their environmental ethos extends beyond the recording process through the long-running CAKE Forest initiative, with the band giving away native tree saplings at every headline show as part of an ongoing commitment to conservation.
Their most recent studio album, Showroom of Compassion, became the band’s first Billboard 200 number one, earning critical acclaim for its deadpan songwriting and understated musical invention. More than a decade later, CAKE remain as singular as ever, with work continuing on their ninth studio album, expected in 2027. The forthcoming release will feature Billionaire in Space, a new song already previewed during a Texas Public Radio session.
Australian audiences will finally have the opportunity to experience CAKE’s idiosyncratic brilliance once again, with a career-spanning set celebrating one of alternative music’s most enduring originals.
