Emerging singer-songwriter Clarity Liao continues to open up the emotional world of her forthcoming EP Dear… with the release of her latest single, ‘Have You’. Blending intimate bedroom pop with indie-pop warmth and heartfelt lyricism, the track captures the quiet ache of unspoken love, turning an unsent confession into one of Liao’s most personal releases to date.
A songwriter since the age of seven, Liao has already made a name for herself as an exciting young talent. As principal songwriter for the band Navillera, she helped shape the group’s award-winning debut single ‘Too Young’, which received the 2024 Yamaha National Best Popular Music Award. Her composition ‘I Need You’ also took first place at the YMS 2025 National Composers competition.
Now developing her solo career, Liao is expanding her musical palette across indie pop, bedroom pop, R&B and modern doo-wop, while retaining the deeply personal storytelling that has defined her work so far.
‘Have You’ finds the singer-songwriter in particularly vulnerable territory, exploring the bittersweet experience of loving someone from afar while never finding the courage to reveal those feelings. The song takes its inspiration from a real friendship and the complicated emotions that grew beneath it.
“Have You is a love letter to a boy I was friends with, but never had the courage to tell I liked him,” Clarity explains. “It came from the feeling of caring deeply for someone while keeping it hidden, and trying to become someone they would notice. I changed my style, put more thought into how I looked, and gave so much of myself, but still couldn’t have him. The song captures that heartbreak of wanting someone who never fully sees the effort behind it.”
Rather than simply documenting the experience, Liao approached the song as the letter she never managed to send. The result is a track that leans into the messy, often obsessive nature of unspoken feelings, while remaining grounded in the vulnerability of wanting to be seen by someone who may never look back.
“I wanted the lyrics to feel honest, vulnerable, and a little obsessive in the way real feelings can be when you like someone deeply,” she says. “I also tried to capture his music taste so it would feel personal, like something he might finally understand if he ever hears it.”
That sense of intimacy carries through to the production. Understated instrumentation and spacious arrangements leave room for Liao’s expressive vocals to carry the emotional weight, giving the track the atmosphere of a private conversation rather than an oversized pop statement. Its restraint allows the central feeling to linger, placing the listener inside the uncertainty of waiting, hoping and ultimately having to let go.
“I wanted it to sound like a quiet confession, with enough space for the feelings to come through clearly. The overall sound was shaped to support the emotional tension of waiting, hoping, and not being able to let go.”
The single arrives as part of Liao’s forthcoming seven-track EP, Dear…, a collection of musical love letters centred on love, jealousy, rejection and loss. Across the project, unfinished conversations and unspoken emotions become the foundation for songs that explore the complicated spaces between hope and heartbreak. Love is presented as both comforting and confining, with vulnerability and longing often existing side by side.
