San Francisco thrash metal veterans Death Angel are heading back to Australia for the first time in nearly a decade, bringing their influential 1990 album Act III to the stage in its entirety.

The tour will take in Adelaide’s Froth & Fury festival, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, with the band also performing a selection of tracks from across their four-decade career.

Emerging from the Bay Area thrash scene in the 1980s, Death Angel helped shape the genre alongside bands including Metallica, Slayer, Exodus and Testament. Their early albums, The Ultra-Violence (1987) and Frolic Through the Park(1988), established their reputation for technical playing and relentless riffs.

Released through Geffen Records in 1990, Act III marked a turning point. The album pushed beyond conventional thrash, incorporating more melodic and progressive elements without abandoning the band’s heavier roots. Tracks including Seemingly Endless Time and A Room With a View brought Death Angel wider attention, with both receiving MTV airplay.

The band have remained active through reunions, lineup changes and further releases, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance in 2020 for the title track of their 2019 album Humanicide.

Australian fans last saw Death Angel in 2018, when they toured alongside Sepultura. This time, they’re returning as headliners, revisiting the record that helped broaden their sound while leaving room for some older thrash favourites.

For longtime fans, it’s a rare opportunity to hear Act III from beginning to end. For those who missed the band’s earlier Australian visits, it’s a chance to catch one of the Bay Area scene’s enduring acts on home soil.
