James White & The Wild Fire have returned with their latest single, The Ballad of Jimmy Blanco, released on 29th May as the latest preview of their forthcoming EP, How To Replace Anxiety With A Broken Heart, arriving on 19th June.

Since forming in 2019, the band have built a reputation for combining psychedelic folk rock with the rich traditions of American roots music. Their sound balances expansive, atmospheric arrangements with the precision and warmth of bluegrass and Americana, all centred around the honest and emotionally direct songwriting of frontman James White.

Excitement surrounding the new EP has already translated into impressive early momentum. Ahead of release, How To Replace Anxiety With A Broken Heart has reached Number 1 in Amazon Music’s Rock pre-orders chart and Number 2 in the Country chart, highlighting strong demand for the band’s first new collection of songs in almost three years.

The Ballad of Jimmy Blanco finds the group leaning into the vibrant interplay of country, bluegrass and Americana influences while showcasing White’s playful lyrical style. Propelled by acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, double bass and tightly locked percussion, the track delivers a restless energy throughout. As the arrangement develops, an extended instrumental passage opens the door to swirling psychedelic textures, bringing an unexpected twist to the song’s roots-driven foundation.

Speaking about the track, White says:

“The Ballad of Jimmy Blanco is my personal favourite on the EP. It was written a year or so after failing to move on from a bad breakup – the one Bonfire was written about. I basically just thought ‘if one of my mates were in this position, what would you be saying to them?’, hence the use of an alter ego in the title. Personally, I think it is the showcasing of each members’ individual talents that makes the song pop. From Brooke’s bass solo, Mike’s two Violin solos, Joe’s harmonies and even my solo. I also really, really love the psychedelic build up before the last chorus!”

The new release continues a successful journey that has already seen the band achieve multiple Number 1 positions on Amazon UK’s download charts, including three Country chart-toppers and two Number 1s in Folk. Their debut EP, Making Tracks, introduced listeners to their distinctive approach, while Live at Saffron Hall captured the energy of a sold-out hometown performance at one of the region’s most prestigious venues.

The band’s last release arrived in March 2023 with their interpretation of the traditional bluegrass classic Little Maggie. Following a sold-out tour finale later that year, James White & The Wild Fire stepped away from recording and performing, entering a period of reflection that would shape the material on their upcoming EP.

According to White, the project has since entered a new chapter. There is also the possibility that How To Replace Anxiety With A Broken Heart could serve as the band’s final release. The record draws heavily from a turbulent personal period, exploring heartbreak, frustration, uncertainty and the process of rebuilding emotional stability.

While remaining firmly rooted in acoustic instrumentation, the EP expands the band’s musical palette into increasingly psychedelic territory. Previous single Bonfire offered an early indication of this direction, gradually transforming from a restrained folk arrangement into a cathartic and emotionally charged finale.
